Triathletes in training

Record numbers of employees have jumped at the chance to sign-up for a post-festive challenge and participate in the NISSAN/BRW Corporate Triathlon National Series in Perth.

About 195 Rio Tinto challengers will form teams of three for the event at Langley Park, on Sunday, March 7, when thousands of calories will be shed as they take to the Swan River for a 400 metre swim followed by a 10 kilometre cycle along Mounts Bay Road and a 4 kilometre run along the foreshore.

Team organisers Melissa Cundy,Candis Culverwell, Ruth Jamieson and Amabel Stratford said record entries were received this year, but they also urged latecomers to step forward.

“If anyone is interested in participating in any part of the event, we encourage them to get in touch because we will need substitutes on the day in case of illness,” said Melissa.

Amabel Stratford said the hour-long event was an ideal introduction to group sport challenges. “It’s a good one for newcomers and gives people something to aim for after the festive season.”

The teams consist of employees from a cross-section of Rio Tinto business divisions and include operators and general managers. “For many employees, this is their first triathlon and I know several people last year who ‘caught the bug’ and went on to compete in the triathlon season,” said Candis Culverwell.

Graduate health and injury management advisor Anna De Meersman is competing in the event for the first time and has teamed with seasoned colleagues Tanja Koeberle-Troy and Kerry Rhoades.

Anna said: “Having team mates gives you more incentive to train, and the training then flows into other aspects of your life…the more I exercise, the more I find myself watching what I eat because you realise it will impact on your new, healthier lifestyle.”

Rio Tinto has supported the charity event for the last four years with entry fees, corporate T-shirts and water bottles, plus every competitor will receive a BRW Corporate Triathlon T-Shirt.

Entrants compete in a team sprint or a team race, which is a more demanding challenge in which every team player swims, cycles and runs the course.

A full set of results with split times will be posted on the SuperSprint website by 6pm after the event and participants will receive a results certificate by email with their placing and times.
