Last issue, we covered managing hydration in the heat of the Pilbara. As part of Community Safety Week, Health and Wellness Coordinator Bob Gorham took the message out into the community with a series of visits to local schools and an Aboriginal elders aged care group, gaining some great feedback.
Bob delivered his watery message to about 400 people at two primary schools in Tom Price and a high school in Paraburdoo, as well as the aged care group.
"Chatting to small groups of primary kids was good fun and they were very enthusiastic about learning what is and isn’t a good drink to have on hot days," Bob said. "I was a little nervous at the high school as my talk needed to adapt from small groups to one whole-of-school address!"
Bob found that, although many knew it was important to drink two litres of water a day as a minimum, the challenge in the message was how that translates to actual glasses per day.
"Find your favourite glass or drink bottle and measure how much it holds, as a guide to track how many glasses of water you are getting each day," Bob said.
Feedback from the groups was positive and it seems Bob taught the teachers a thing or two as well.
