On the Road

  • Alcohol and driving never mix - alcohol affects decision-making,
reaction time, speed and distance judgements, concentration and
perception, and gives a false sense of confidence. So if you are
planning a big night out, make sure you have a skipper to take you
    home.
  • Stick to the speed limit - speed is usually a major factor in serious
and fatal traffic crashes. In 2000, 84% of speed-related fatalities
involved male drivers with the majority (40%) in the 17-24 year old
    age group.
  • Belt up - drivers and passengers travelling unrestrained are 10 times
more likely to be killed in a road crash than those wearing a seatbelt.
In 2001, 29% of vehicle occupants killed in a police-attended road
crash in WA were known not to be wearing a seat belt.
  • Get enough rest - fatigue causes several problems for drivers,
including slow reactions and decisions, slow control movements,
hallucinations, decreased tolerance for other road users, poor lane
    tracking and loss of awareness.
