Offset your sleep debt

Sleeping manIdeally, each individual needs between seven and eight hours of good quality sleep each night. Those who have less than this build up sleep debt, a concept similar to normal economic debt, which continues to compound until you get enough sleep to offset the debt.

Imagine only getting 4 hours sleep a night. That would leave you with a debt of up to 28 hours of missed sleeping time a week!

Here are some ways you can offset the debt and get your account back into the black.

  • Unwind earlier in the evenings. Watching thriller movies or thinking about repayments on your bank loan will not ease your anxiety or resting heart rate, which can make it difficult to sleep. Also avoid exercise close to bed time.
  • Develop a sleep ritual. Doing the same thing every night signals to your body that it is time to settle down for sleep.
  • Create a place of rest. Sleep in a dark, warm room with the window slightly ajar to let in some fresh air.
  • Get the right equipment! Make sure your mattress and pillows are supportive and comfortable.
  • Avoid stimulants. Caffeine, alcohol and nicotine should all be avoided before bedtime.
