Eating on the run

One way to combat the shiftwork blues, like fatigue, lack of concentration and irritability, is to eat a healthy diet. Too often, fatigue and unusual meal times leads to junk food bingeing. This starts a vicious cycle of bad health that can set you on a path to problems like indigestion, heartburn, loss of appetite, stomach-aches, weight gain and increased chance of heart attack.

Following are some tips to help you maintain a proper diet and eating patterns:

  • eat light and healthy foods at night, including fish, salad, steamed vegetables and fruit.
  • before sleeping after a night shift, have a moderate breakfast such as cereal so your sleep is not disturbed by hunger or feeling too full.
  • limit your intake of caffeine, alcohol and salt.
  • avoid using sleeping pills.
