Riding the Storm

Volunteers walked door-to-door warning more than 2000 residents in low-lying areas of  blackouts, gale force winds and possible flooding. About 400 people evacuated and set up camp in an emergency shelter at West Pilbara TAFE.

Still, some people chose to ignore the warnings leaving emergency workers to contend with sight-seeing drivers, cyclists and a group of thrillseekers who risked their lives to surf in Dampier Harbour.

Flying debris and disruption to essential services are the biggest risks most households face when a cyclone strikes so be prepared:

  • Secure all loose objects around the house or in the garden.
  • Ensure you have plenty of bottled water on hand.
  • Freeze icecream containers of water to use in an esky and keep tinned food in the cupboard. If the power is cut you will not be able to cook or store perishables.
  • Prepare an emergency first aid kit. Put all medications into a waterproof container and keep them on your person.
  • Wear protective clothing, stout shoes and insect repellent.
  • To maintain personal hygiene, use antibacterial lotions that do not require water.

Cyclone season can be scary for the uninitiated. If you have an interesting story, or some advice for staying safe in an emergency, Pilbara Health would love to hear all about it!
