Gym buddies: Agata and Danielle warm up on the treadmill.
Five weeks into the challenge, Yandi RTP ranked 11th in the national ladder, had completed 2,568,407 steps and had arrived at Adelaide. The average tally for steps stood at an impressive 69,416 per day.
“We all work in the warehouse so there are plenty of opportunities to encourage one another to go the gym and we walk home in the dark with our torches and talk about how we think we’re doing,” Agata said.
Her team players are aged under-36 and like Agata, have caught the fitness bug. Ross Morgan is the team’s ‘Mr Active’ who works out twice daily and plays volleyball and cricket, while Danielle Speedy and Jason Mills do the hard yards in the gym.
Agata and Ross are the early risers of the team and can be spotted in the gym from 4am onwards. At the close of the day, Agata teams up with Danielle and Jason for the 3.5 kilometre ‘torchlight walk’ back to camp.
“It’s easy to put on weight when you work on a mine site and the desserts are particularly tempting, but since I’ve been doing the Jenny Craig diet and taken up the gym and Pilates classes, I’ve lost six kilos and dropped a dress size,” Agata said.
With the team on a roll, the future looks bright for Yandi RTP. Agata said exercise has become a way of life for the warehouse team, as they reap the benefits of feeling fitter and shedding unwanted kilos.
