Instead of the gym, try cycling. Cycling is great exercise for the heart and lungs and is a great way to contribute to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Cycling is a form of cardiovascular, aerobic exercise, which utilises large muscle groups, like those in the legs.
"A person’s maximum heart rate measures about 220, minus their age. If you are 38, your maximum heart rate will be approximately 182 beats per minute. For exercise to be beneficial, aerobically, the heart rate should run at about 50% of the maximum for the unfit, and 80% for those in better shape," said Pilbara Iron exercise specialist Elaine Kennedy.
Counting your wrist pulse for 10 seconds then multiplying by 6 is the simplest way to check.
Varying your exercise routine is the most beneficial way to keep motivated and ensure your body gets a good, regular work out. On the bike, this can mean peddling while standing up or racing yourself up hills rather than cruising on flat ground.
