Seconds count

The First Responders are Pilbara Iron employees working in Perth, who ensure a rapid response to emergency calls and the best possible care in the event of someone suffering cardiac arrest.

Every minute lost after cardiac arrest reduces the chance of survival by 10 per cent. The First Responder unit is trained in defibrilation and resuscitation - life saving skills needed during those crucial moments.

The First Responders provide Pilbara Iron staff with emergency care as quickly as possible. During an emergency, telephone 000 and the closest Pilbara Iron First Responder unit will be contacted by St John’s and directed to your location.

Pilbara Iron’s risk and emergency management advisor Eddie Coyle is leading the team following the release of revised resuscitation protocols by the Australian Resuscitation Council earlier this year.

“There have been some significant changes to resuscitation procedures that simplify the whole process. We have been working hard to audit our systems, test our equipment and train our team to ensure we are developing a best practice emergency response system,” Eddie said.

The First Responder system is based on three elements:

  1. First Aid Training, specific to cardiac arrest, for nominated staff members.
  2. Direct contact with the St John Ambulance Operations Centre.
  3. Ongoing clinical and training support from St John Ambulance.

To hone their skills, the First Responders participate in regular training sessions and Pilbara Iron’s call out computer system server is put through its paces on a regular basis.
