Talking the lingo

Dampier site chemical administrator Lisa Platten said, “Chem Alert is a great tool for ensuring that people know how to handle chemicals safely. It allows us to access information on hazardous substances quickly and efficiently, which is essential in a busy workplace. The colour coding of the chemical reports takes the guesswork out of the process.”

The colour coding is based on a traffic light system where green means best choice, amber means handle with care and red mean choose a safer alternative substance if possible, if not handle with extreme caution.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs)
A MSDS is the key to communicating hazards and safe handling procedures for different chemicals. It is a standard report, containing information on the hazards, health effects, exposure limits and precautions to be taken with specific products.

Every chemical must be on the Chem Alert register before it is used in the workplace and have a MSDS less than 5 years old.

Contact your site chemical site administrator for more information.
