It all measures up

You might think you know your drinks, but with the increasing popularity of pre-mixed drinks that taste like softies, it can be easy to think that what you are drinking contains less alcohol.

We give you a guide of what is in the standard drink:

Wine

1.5 standard drinks in every 150mL serve
12.5% alcohol/vol

Spirit Shot

1 standard drink in a 30mL serve
40% alcohol/vol

Sparkling Wine/Champagne

1.5 standard drinks in every 170mL serve
11.5% alcohol/vol

Pre-mix Spirits in a bottle

1.2 standard drinks in every 300mL serve
5% alcohol/vol

Pre-mix Spirits in a can

1.5 standard drinks in every 375mL serve
5% alcohol/vol

Mid Strength Beer

1 standard drink in every 375mL serve
3.5% alcohol/vol

Full Strength Beer

1.5 standard drinks in every 375mL serve
4.9% alcohol/vol

Full Strength Beer
1.1 standard drinks in every 285mL serve
1.6 standard drinks in every 425mL serve
Mid Strength Beer
.08 standard drinks in every 285mL serve
1.2 standard drinks in every 425mL serve
Light Beer
.06 standard drinks in every 285mL serve
0.9 standard drinks in every 425mL serve

Spirit Nip

1 standard drink every 30mL serve
40% alcohol/vol

Port/Sherry

1 standard drink every 60mL serve
20% alcohol/volume

Bottle of wine

7.5 standard drinks in every 750mL bottle
12.5% alcohol/volume

Bottle of Spirits

22 standard drinks in every 700mL bottle
40% alcohol/volume

Remember to always check the labels to find out the number of standard drinks are in the bottle or can.

Standard drinks are calulated to one decimal place, so to make your drink counting easier - round the numbers up or down.  That means if a drink is labelled .09, count this as one standard drink, or if 1.6, count this as 1.5 standard drinks.
