Wasted headspace

Losing your job from a positive drug test is usually a powerful motivation to steer clear, but armed with a decent pay cheque and time off, some people use drugs to party, only to find the reality can be quite the opposite.

Methamphetamine (or ice, rock, crystal or meth) is being used increasingly in WA, with some high profile cases highlighting the risks. Ice is highly addictive, easy to score, cheap to manufacture and, combined with highly addictive properties and 'superhuman' effects, it often fools users into believing they are in control.

Tragically, the severe short, medium and long-term side effects can lead to a train wreck of personal problems. No matter how young or strong-willed you think you are, this drug can derail all the important things in life - your friendships, your job and your family. Anxiety, paranoia, increased aggression, mood swings, irritability and sleeping disorders are just some effects which can make living with users unbearable.

Continued meth abuse may lead to users obsessing on banal repetitive tasks and being too wired to sleep, eat or socialise, which can alienate them from their friends and loved ones. Its addictive properties can drain your pay packet, destroy friendships and leave you spending your free time "watching puddles dry".

If you know of someone who is starting to take up the habit, or who is already in its grasp, call the Alcohol and Drug Information Service visit www.drugaware.com.au or call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 to report a dealer.

The Pilbara operations Employee Support Program also provides confidential help and advice. The details are on the Pilbara Health website.
