About Us

The Health Standards were developed to protect the long-term health of Rio Tinto employees as well as the assets and reputation of the company. When implemented, these Standards will help drive the performance improvement we seek.

Pilbara Iron’s safety performance has improved rapidly in the past decade. By questioning how we work, and constantly searching for better ways, we have greatly reduced the risk of accidents and injuries.

But the challenge doesn’t stop there!

As part of our commitment to zero injuries, we are constantly searching for new ways to improve the health and safety of everyone in our community. In 2004, Rio Tinto introduced new Occupational Health Standards globally. These standards set important benchmarks for the quality of our working environment and cover 16 major issues related to heat, dust and noise exposure, hazardous substances, manual handling and fitness for work.

In response, Pilbara Iron's health and safety team initiated some far-reaching technical studies to measure and report on these levels across our operations. The findings were reviewed during the inaugural Health Systems audit in January, 2005. Health audits are now a vital part of the operational routine on all Pilbara Iron sites.

Pilbara Iron’s health and safety management system has also been renamed IronSafe and Pilbara Health is a fresh and innovative part of this system. The health campaign brings together information and advice to help you become fitter, healthier and better able to cope with life’s everyday challenges.

Health safety and design professionals have worked together to give you easy access to a colourful collection of ideas and tips you can use, at home or at work, to help boost your strength, stamina and zest for life.

At Pilbara Iron, we will never trade personal safety for other business considerations. Our safety vision applies equally to our employees, their families and the many contractors who make up approximately 30% of our workforce. By focusing on care at work, and safety at play, we will continue to ensure that everyone in our community enjoys a safe day every day!
